R1234YF

R1234YF is the new mobile refrigerant. It was introduced in 2015, and it has been mandated for use in cars and light trucks produced for the 2021 model year. R1234YF is similar to R134A, but there are a couple of key differences. R1234YF is listed by the EPA as “mildly flammable.” R1234YF is also more expensive than R134A, and servicing R1234YF vehicles requires special, new equipment. On the bright side, R1234YF is more environmentally friendly, and the capacities of R1234YF vehicles are typically less than the capacity of R134A vehicles.  The new refrigerant is more expensive, but less is required. Often, we are asked “Why is the new refrigerant so expensive,” or “what repair shops work on R1234YF vehicles?” R1234YF is expensive because manufacturers have not been able to ramp up production to meet demand.
