What is a Brake Caliper?

What is a Brake Caliper? A Brake Caliper is the part of your car’s brake system that holds your car’s Brake Pads in place and causes the Brake Pads to press against your car’s Brake Rotors when you apply the brake by putting your foot on the brake pedal. The friction created by forcing the Brake Pads into the Brake Calipers is what causes your car to slow down.

Most newer cars and light trucks have Four Wheel Disc Brake Systems. This means that each wheel has its own caliper. Several conditions lead to the need to replace Brake Calipers.  If Brake Calipers leak, if the air bleeders will not open, or if the caliper slides free, it is necessary to replace brake calipers. Also, if the pistons in the Brake Calipers extend beyond their limits, Brake Calipers must be replaced.

The best way to avoid Brake Caliper replacement is to never use your brakes. The next best way to avoid Brake Caliper replacement is to ask your mechanic to inspect your brakes on a regular basis. Brake inspections are typically performed every 6,000 miles with a tire rotation.
