Missouri Emissions Inspection

Gas powered vehicles manufactured in 1996 or later generally require an emissions inspection and are required for initial vehicle registration and/or license plate renewal for small and light trucks registered in St. Louis City, St. Louis County, St. Charles County, Franklin County, and Jefferson County. Vehicles that are exempt from the Missouri Emissions Inspection requirement include vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight in excess of 8,500 pounds, gas powered vehicles whose model year is 1995 or older, and deisel powered vehicles whose model year is 1994 or older. Missouri Emissions Inspections must be conducted at a Gateway Vehicle Inspection Program (GVIP) station. For a list of GVIP stations, click here. Missouri Emissions Inspections are required to transfer a vehicles title or to renew a vehicle's registration. For license plate renewal, even year vehicles subject to the emissions inspection requirement must be inspected in even years, and odd year vehicles must be inspected in odd years. For example, if you purchase a 2018 model year vehicle, for which an emission inspection is required, in 2021, you will need to have the car inspected again in 2022. After that, the inspection will be required every even year to renew license plates. For more information, please contact the Gateway Vehicle Inspection website.
