Why Doesn't My Lug Wrench Fit My Lug Nuts?

Why Doesn’t My Lug Wrench Fit My Lug Nuts? It is not uncommon for motorists to be stuck with a Flat Tire that they can not change. Sometimes, they can’t find the Wrench or Jack. Other times, the Lug Wrench will not fit the Wheel Nuts. If you are reading this on the side of the road, you probably don’t want to hear that it might have been a good idea to check proper operation prior to the trip. So, we are not going to mention that. There are two common reasons why Lug Wrenches, also called Tire Irons, will not work on your car. Either the wrench is defective, or the Lug Nuts have become misshaped. The second is more common. So, let’s start there. Many vehicles have Chrome Capped Lug Nuts, and these can be a problem. Moisture becomes trapped between the chrome cap and the steel portion on the Lug Nut. This causes the Lug Nuts to swell making it difficult or impossible to fit the wrench to the nuts. The best solution is to replace the Lug Nuts with Solid Lug Nuts. Dorman Products has a wide selection of solid Lug Nuts that are not subject to swelling. Regarding defective Lug Wrenches, or Tire Irons, the most common problem is excess paint on the tool. This reduces the amount of space between the wrench and the nut and can make it difficult to change a tire. Try using a tool or abrasive material to remove any excess paint on the inside of the wrench. Remeber, most Lug Wrenches are never used. Consider buying a Breaker Bar and Impact Socket that fits your vehicle's Lug Nuts. This will make the job easier next time. If you’re currently stranded, you may be thinking, “Thanks, Buddy, but what do I do now?” If you have a Four-Way Wrench for your trailer tires, try that. Also, if you have any sockets, particularly around 22 MM, try them. With sockets, a hammer may be needed to force the socket to fit on your Lug Nuts. We hope that this helps.
